I’m sorry I’ve not posted for the last two days (oppss.. its four days). Was too busy and tired to write. Right after i said i’ll keep at it I failed to do so. You see, I can’t even trust myself cos even i have no control over what happens in my life. Only God is in charge.
Anywayz i’ve learnt a lot in the past few days. For one, i’ve learnt the importance of preparation. A friend of mine described how doctors really look down on psychologists. Being a psychologist wannabe, she was pretty upset. But when she thought about it, she understood why. You see, in Singapore many so called psychologists and counsellors do not have adequate training in the field. Most are degree holders or at most honors degree holders. These unqualified people put on the title of psychologist, and try to practise as one. In the end, their insufficient training caused many patients to suffer. Not to mention, they drag down the reputation of the profession.
Another friend of mine shared how a certain Christian man tried to be a pastor. This man of God was fervent in his serving. However, he lacked the training in theological knowledge and pastoral care. Even though he was passionate about his service as a pastor, his unpreparedness caused many Christians under his care to suffer. Not to mention, he himself experience burnout very often.
Similarly, I feel its the same for boy-girl-relationships. If an individual has many issues him/herself (e.g. low self-esteem, very dependant on other people, insecure, immature etc etc..) when he/she enters into a bgr, he/she will drag the other party down. Even though the couple may truly love one another, both parties will suffer in the relationship due to their personal issues.
From all these incidents, I’ve come to realize the importance of preparation. All our actions will lead to consequences. Thus, we have to be responsible for our actions. We should not and cannot do whatever our heart pleases. Before we act, we must be sure we are prepared for it. We must make sure we have the resources and skills to complete that task. It would be damaging to both our-self and other people if we try to do something that is beyond our ability.
In psychology, there is this guideline stating that we should not practice beyond our area of expertise. I think this rule serves us well in other aspects of our lives. Think before you act. Be prepared before you act. Do not act hastily and cause harm to yourself and others around you.
Preparation can be done even before we have plans to act. For myself, I want to focus on my own personal development and growth. I want to equip myself with all sorts of skills and knowledge, so that when i want to do something, i am more likely to be prepared for it. On a spiritual note, I want to discover and build up on my spiritual gifts, so that when God wants to use me, i am prepared. So this is my focus in life now. To always improve myself and prepare myself for the challenges in life. May God’s grace be with me.
